COVID-19 UPDATE:  Since April 2020, In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, EdCaminos has supported the"COMIDA PARA VECINOS" program to provide food packages to our neighbors in the Avenida Independencia area. We have raised over $18,000 USD during this period, all of which has been used for the food support program. As the COVID-19 situation has improved we are now transitioning back to our main educational support mission. Beginning August 1 2021 we will move to bi-weekly food donations, and at some point, depending on the situation, we will scale the program back further. All donations made to EdCaminos until August 1 2021 have been used for the Food for Neighbors program, and this will continue for at least several months. However as of this date (August 1, 2021) all donations made to EdCaminos will be used for general programming support, and will not be used exclusively for the food program. To those of you who have provided financial and other support, we thank you on behalf of our food program participants. If you have any questions you can contact Sonia (in Spanish, saraiza@edcaminos.org), Jeff (edcaminos1@gmail.com) or Shannon (shannonshaffer@yahoo.com). STAY SAFE!

At EdCaminos we offer a number of academic and non-academic activities for children of different ages, their parents, and other adults who live in the area of Avenida Independencia, San Miguel de Allende.  All of our activities and services are provided free of charge.

How did we decide what kinds of activities to develop?  This is a constant work in progress, and will likely continue to evolve in the future.  But our work is also guided by a diagnostic study (version in Spanish) that was completed by two local consultants, who worked closely with EdCaminos during our initial implementation phase.  The purpose of this study was to take stock of the situation in the Avenida Independencia area through interviews with local residents, visits to schools, and conversations with other non profits.  This report, together with our own internal planning, has served as a reference point for developing the EdCaminos menu of activities, which includes:

Tutoring. We coordinate with the local elementary (primary) schools to identify children in grades 1-4 who are behind in their studies, and
need a little extra help.  We then match these children with tutors, who are secondary school students in San Miguel de Allende who spend
time volunteering with EdCaminos in order to fulfill the social service requirement for graduation.  The tutors work individually with children
(one on one), and are closely monitored and supported by our Director.  Some of our tutors hope to become teachers, so the volunteer
experience at EdCaminos provides them with an excellent opportunity to practice their teaching.

English classes.  We offer English classes for students and parents, using English-speaking volunteers who live in San Miguel de Allende, or
come to help us from other countries.  The classes meet at least once a week, and are free of charge.

Art Classes.  A lot of the activities at EdCaminos require creating things by hand, such as baskets, drawings, stories and even little
books where students tell stories or summarize what they have learned (with drawings and photos).  Our workspace is full of things created
by our kids, many of which eventually up in their homes.

Celebrations.  We love to celebrate special days throughout the year with our kids and their families, such as Día del Niño, Easter, Mother's
          Day, and Independence Day.

Reading.  Reading is an important component of the work we do at EdCaminos, and we encourage our students to read at home with their
parents.  We also participate in a reading program on saturday afternoons, and have a library that we use to lend out books and stimulate the
childrens' interest in reading as a hobby.
